What are Removable Prosthodontics?

Prosthodontics is the branch of dentistry that deals with the replacement of missing or gapped teeth and/or the restoration of parts of the face or jaw. Removable prosthodontics are artificial structures specifically designed to address these issues and are not permanently fixed in the mouth.

While many patients undergoing restorative dental work may have fixed prosthodontics such as dental crowns, dental bridges or dental implants, removable prosthodontics such as full or partial dentures may be the best – or only – option for others. This could be the case for a patient who has few or no teeth left and for whom those remaining teeth are extremely unhealthy. Patients with bone loss in their mouths, severe gum disease, extensive decay, or the effects of physical trauma may also require removable prosthodontics.

There are two primary types of removable prosthodontics: partial dentures and complete dentures. Removable partial dentures replace one or more teeth. They can even replace teeth on both sides of the mouth in a single arch. They are supported and retained by the surrounding teeth and underlying tissues. A removable partial denture is easily repaired and adjusted, and is easier to clean than a fixed partial denture.

A removable complete denture can be the solution to extensive bone loss, gum disease, or severe decay or abscesses. For patients with an inability to properly care for their teeth due to reduced mobility or other issues, a complete denture can restore comfort and aesthetic appeal during routine activities such as eating and speaking.

Using molds and impressions, your prosthodontist can build a natural-looking, realistic prosthetic device for you. Whether it is a full or partial denture, great care is taken to ensure proper design and fit. Your prosthodontist understands that you will live with your prosthetic device every day, and your comfort and appearance is paramount.
