CEREC: An Overview

Advancements in technology improve many aspect of our lives every day. This is also occurring in the field of dentistry, with cutting edge ways to provide great results, less discomfort, and less time in the dental chair. One innovative technique is called CEREC, which creates natural looking and convenient dental restorations in a single trip to the dentist.

CEREC stands for Ceramic Reconstruction. It uses specialized computer technology, a 3D camera, and a milling machine to achieve amazing results. The process begins with taking a picture of the prepared tooth and transferring the image to the computer, which employs CAD/CAM technology to design the perfect restoration for you. Then the milling machine creates the restoration right there while you wait. The dentist bonds the restoration to your existing tooth and your smile is complete in about one hour.

This type of technology provides patients with a number of benefits. One is that the tooth-colored restoration blends in beautifully with the rest of your smile. No more silver showing to make your smile look less than perfect. The ceramic material is also compatible with your mouth tissue, plaque resistant, and non-abrasive. Another advantage is that CEREC restorations do not involve sending anything to an outside dental lab, since the restoration is made right there using the specialized equipment. This eliminates any need for temporaries. The process also removes the need for messy, unpleasant impressions because the CEREC camera is used instead. Finally, the technology is fast and accurate, making a full restoration complete in one trip to the dentist.

Not every dentist in Fresno is qualified in CEREC or has the necessary equipment on site. If you are interested in getting a CEREC restoration, ask your dentist if it is available there and if not, call around to find a practice that offers this innovative technique.
