Common Oral Surgery Procedures

A specialization area of dentistry is oral surgery, which involves diagnosing and treating functional or aesthetic issues of the teeth, gums, jaws, neck, and head. Some dentists are able to perform oral surgeries, but often it is advised to seek treatment from an oral surgeon who is well-trained and experienced in the sometimes tricky aspects of intricate surgeries. Here are some of the most common types of oral surgery.

Jaw surgery

Often surgery is the best way to correct various problems associated with the jaw. There are a number of issues surgery can address, or reasons behind the need for this type of intervention. Some typical cases are incorrect bite (malocclusion), trauma, teeth grinding or clenching that causes tooth wear, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder, incorrect jaw position, misproportioned facial appearance, or problems using the jaw for eating or speaking.

Dental implants

A very popular type of oral surgery is replacing missing teeth with dental implants. This procedure involves surgically inserting a titanium rod in the site of the missing tooth root. The jaw bone will fuse together with the implant, and then later the procedure can be completed by placing a crown on top of the post.

Tooth extractions

Another very common reason for oral surgery is extracting teeth that are causing some type of problem in your mouth. This may include impacted or partially erupted wisdom teeth, severely damaged teeth from decay or trauma, primary teeth that haven’t fallen out appropriately, or orthodontic treatment that requires tooth removal to achieve the desired results.
