He graduated from the UCLA School of Dentistry in 1999, Omicron Kappa Upsilon — the highest honors — and bought this practice from Dr. Garth Schmidt in 2001. This is the only dental office in the Central Valley that treats patients under deep sedation with an M.D. anesthesiologist.

Sedation dentistry is particularly rewarding for Dr. Smith because his father was an anesthesiologist and the two love to talk about the topic of sedation.

Clinical Focus

The four levels of sedation this office is set up for

A family-friendly dental practice specializing in IV Sedation dentistry for patients who are very scared of the dentist.

  • Nitrous oxide (laughing gas)

A mild form of sedation. Every operatory is equipped with a hookup for nitrous oxide, even the hygiene rooms. The patient is able to legally drive home.

  • Single pill with laughing gas

One pill about an hour before the appointment for a mildly relaxed state, with nitrous oxide added in the office. A popular option for cleaning visits and minor procedures.

  • IV sedation with an M.D. anesthesiologist

The M.D. anesthesiologist starts the IV, safely puts the patient to sleep, and gently wakes them when the procedure is over. Dr. Smith calls afterwards to check on recovery.

  • General anesthesia — completely asleep

Deep sedation and general anesthesia are administered by the anesthesiologist so the patient is completely asleep for treatment. Propofol is primarily used, which makes for a smoother recovery.
