Preparing for Your IV Sedation Appointment

To ensure maximum comfort during an oral surgery procedure, many patients choose intravenous sedation. IV sedation works quickly and leaves the patient with no memory of the procedure after it is complete. Oral sedation methods that are administered through an IV require a little more preparation than other dental sedation options. If you have scheduled an oral surgery treatment that will include the administration of IV sedation, here are some guidelines to follow to help guarantee a safe and successful procedure:

  • Do not eat or drink anything for 8 hours prior to your procedure. Even water can cause nausea and vomiting, leading to serious complications.
  • Do not smoke for at least 12 hours prior to sedation.
  • Notify your doctor if you are experiencing any symptoms of illness on the day of sedation such as coughing, congestion, fever, or stomach upset.
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing and flat, closed shoes to your appointment. You may need get up and walk after your procedures, so low heels will make this easier.
  • If you wear contacts or dentures, remove them prior to the procedure.
  • Leave your jewelry and valuables at home.
  • Wear minimal makeup and remove nail polish before your appointment.
  • Arrange to have a capable adult accompany you to your appointment and drive
    you home from your procedure.
  • Do not drive or operate heavy machinery until the day following your surgery.
  • Bed rest is recommended until the full effects of the sedation have subsided.

By following these simple guidelines, your IV sedation procedure should be smooth and uneventful. Consult with your sedation dentist for any additional questions or concerns you may have about your IV sedation appointment.
